For a basic trial know the ultimate rule that testimony must be relevant to whether the accused comitted the offence. Know the hearsay exceptions, especially the confession rules. Know how to cross examine a witness on a prior inconsistent statement or a prior statement containing major omissions. Object to questions containing assumptions the witness has not already agreed to. Object to any oath helping. Remember that one witness cannot say what another person was thinking unless they were directly told by that person. Object to any question asking the defendant why a crown witness would lie.
